Access Control Systems
RFID card and fob access control in Dubai
RFID card access control gives each person a card or fob that opens only approved doors at approved times, and a lost card is blocked in software. We supply, install and repair systems across Dubai after a free site visit.

Why cards remain the workhorse
When a tower has hundreds of residents, a gym, a pool and a roof door, nobody wants to enrol a fingerprint for each. A card is cheap to issue, easy to hand over, and just as easy to cancel. The controller checks the card number against a list of allowed doors and times, then releases the lock for a few seconds and records the event. That simple loop explains why RFID cards still run most offices and residential buildings across Dubai.
What is actually in the system
- Cards and fobs: the credential. Fobs go on key rings, cards go in wallets or lanyards.
- Readers: short-range readers at each door, indoor or weatherproof.
- Controllers: the decision makers, one per door or one per group of doors.
- Locks: magnetic locks, electric strikes or motorised locks, chosen by the door.
- Exit button and emergency release: let people leave without a card and protect escape routes.
- Power supply and battery: keep the system alive in a short outage.
- Management software: issues cards, sets time zones, reports events.
Card technologies in plain words
Older low-frequency proximity cards are easy to clone with cheap devices. Newer smart cards use encrypted exchanges and are much harder to copy. If your building still uses the older kind, a reader upgrade with new cards is a security improvement, not only a cosmetic one. During the survey we read a sample of your existing cards to see which family they belong to.
Designing the rights, not just the hardware
Good access control is mostly a spreadsheet exercise done before installation. Group people by role. Decide which doors each role needs. Set time zones: office hours, cleaners at night, weekend security. Decide how visitors get temporary cards and who collects them. Decide what happens when a card is lost, and how quickly the administrator can block it. Without these decisions, the system ends up with a single group that opens everything.
Anti-passback is useful in car parks and gyms: a card that entered must exit before it can enter again, which stops card sharing. It needs a reader on both sides of the door. For shared facilities, a booking link or a quota rule adds control.
Installing it step by step
- Confirm door list, frame type and lock choice during the visit.
- Pull cable in separate runs for readers, locks and network.
- Fit locks first, since a misaligned magnetic lock causes most callbacks.
- Fit readers at a consistent height, clear of metal that disturbs the field.
- Wire controllers, power supplies and batteries into a ventilated cabinet.
- Connect the fire alarm release where doors serve escape routes.
- Load cards, build groups and test each door with valid, invalid and expired cards.
- Hand over with admin instructions and a card inventory.
Approvals and safety in Dubai
Lobby, gym, pool and parking doors in a tower belong to the common property, so ask the building management or owners' body for written consent before work. Doors on an escape route need a manual release, and controlled doors must unlock on fire alarm; follow Civil Defence requirements and the approved building drawings, which your consultant confirms. If the card system links to cameras, the camera scope falls under SIRA rules, and the owner should use a SIRA-licensed provider where that applies. Card holder lists are personal data: follow applicable UAE data protection and building policies.
What heat, dust and humidity do to card systems
Readers are tough, but their surroundings are not. A controller cabinet in an unventilated riser may reach very high temperatures in summer, which shortens power supply and battery life. Outdoor readers at pool and car-park doors face sun, spray and humidity; a cheap enclosure fails first at the seals. Magnetic locks lose holding force if the armature plate gets dirty or the door has sagged. Clean the lock face and plate at routine visits and check door alignment.
Signs your system needs attention
- Cards must be tapped several times or held at an angle.
- One door fails while others work, pointing to a lock or cable fault.
- Door stays locked after a valid read, or the lock buzzes.
- Event times are wrong after an outage.
- Software cannot see a controller that was online last week.
Our troubleshooting article on card readers that stop reading covers the safe self-checks. Beyond those, call a technician, since opening a powered lock or controller cabinet without isolating supply is unsafe.
How to choose
| Question | If yes | If no |
|---|---|---|
| Hundreds of users and frequent changes? | RFID cards | Consider PIN or biometric |
| Need proof of the person, not the card? | Add fingerprint or face | Card alone is enough |
| Doors outdoors or wet? | Weatherproof readers and shades | Standard indoor readers |
| Escape route door? | Manual release and alarm link | Standard exit button |

Cards, fobs, wristbands and phones
Cards go in wallets and lanyards, fobs suit key rings, and wristbands suit pools and gyms where a card gets wet. Some readers also accept a phone credential. Match the form to the place: a pool deck wristband saves lost cards, while an office needs printed photo cards that double as identity. For visitors, a low-cost disposable card handed out and collected at reception is easier to audit than a PIN written on a sticky note. Related reading: access control in Dubai: complete guide.
Linking cards to vehicles and lifts
The same card can call a lift to the right floor or open a parking gate if the controllers are connected. Plan it early, because lift interfaces need the lift contractor's cooperation and vehicle gates often prefer long-range tags; see gate access control.
What affects the quote
Door count, lock type, cable length, card technology, number of cards, software and integration with lifts, gates or attendance. Controllers that serve many doors reduce cost per door but need good cable routes.

Supply in Dubai
Mount Everest Automatic Doors supplies RFID Card Access Controls in Dubai, with a free site visit, installation and servicing by our own technicians. We also supply to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.
Safety firstDo not force a moving gate or a door held by a spring, and switch off the power before you look at an opener. Springs and motors can injure.
01Dubai conditions
What the climate does to doors and gates
Heat
Motors, boards and batteries in direct sun run hotter than their data sheets assume. Shade, ventilation and a suitable duty rating matter.
Sand and dust
Dust collects in tracks, rack and bottom rails. Cleaning and lubrication on a schedule keep travel smooth and the motor load low.
Coastal humidity
Near the shore, salt and humidity attack bare steel and exposed contacts. Finish, fixings and sealed enclosures are worth specifying.
Wind
Large solid leaves act as sails. Gates and shutters in exposed spots need the right locks, guides and limit settings.

What changes a quote
We do not publish fixed prices because no two openings are the same. These are the things that move a quote, so you know what to have ready.
| Factor | Why it matters | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Opening width and height | Wider and taller openings need stronger operators and rails. | Raises it |
| Leaf weight and material | Solid steel or glass is heavier than light aluminium or mesh. | Raises it |
| Power at the site | A nearby supply is simpler than a new cable run. | Depends |
| Traffic and duty cycle | A shared car park opens far more often than a private villa gate. | Raises it |
| Access control | Remotes only is simple; cards, intercom or number plate reading add equipment. | Depends |
| Finish and design | A matched finish or custom panel takes more fabrication. | Depends |
| Site access | Tight lifts, basements or limited working hours affect the plan. | Depends |
