Boom barriers and parking barriers in Dubai

Boom barriers control vehicle access at Dubai car parks, communities and industrial yards. The arm, drive and safety loops are chosen from your traffic count, headroom and access method. A free site visit confirms the layout before a written quote.

Boom Barriers & Parking Barriers

Boom barrier or something else?

A boom barrier lifts a horizontal arm across a vehicle lane. It is the quickest way to stop and release traffic at car park entries, gated communities, ports, industrial yards and toll points, because the arm is light and travels a short distance. It is also the cheapest-to-live-with entrance device when traffic is heavy, since the motor moves little mass. If you need to close a perimeter completely, a gate is a better answer. If the lane has no headroom, look at sliding barriers. If you are weighing vehicle access against people access, read the barrier family overview.

Trade-offNeeds headroom to riseMore joints to maintainHeavier arm needs a stronger drive

Arm length is set by lane width, and long arms are heavier and more affected by wind, so wide entrances are often split into two lanes with a median rather than covered by one long arm. We confirm the lane layout and any median at the visit.

Drive and duty: why traffic count matters

The same arm can be driven in different ways. Electromechanical drives are common and suit most car parks. Hydraulic drives are chosen for heavier arms and very frequent cycles. The important point is duty cycle: the number of operations per hour and per day the unit is built to repeat without overheating. A residential community and a shift-change car park both have barriers, but their duty cycles are nothing alike. Our guide on hydraulic versus electromechanical boom barriers goes through the trade-offs. Always tell us the peak count of vehicles and how often the barrier must open per hour.

What sits around the barrier

  • Loop detectors in the road hold the arm up while a vehicle is on the line, so it does not come down on a roof.
  • Photocells add a second layer across the lane.
  • Traffic lights and warning lamps tell drivers when to go.
  • Access devices such as RFID readers, remotes, intercoms, tickets and number-plate recognition cameras decide who is admitted.
  • Backup battery or UPS keeps the arm moving through brief power cuts.
  • A manual release and a balanced arm so the barrier can be lifted by hand.

Brands we install and service

We supply and service boom barriers from Automatic Systems, Beninca, CAME, FAAC, Magnetic Autocontrol, Nice and BFT, and you can read more at FAAC, CAME and BFT. The brand is rarely the first decision: duty cycle, arm length and the access method are. We recommend by site rather than by logo.

Standards and approvals that apply

Powered vehicle barriers fall within EN 12453, the safety standard for power-operated industrial, commercial and garage doors, gates and barriers, and UAE rules on the safety of power doors reference it. In practice the installer must limit and test the force at the arm, fit sensing so the arm reverses on contact, and provide a release. At a shared or community entrance, the management company or building owners' body approves the position of the barrier and any traffic signage before work starts. For public-road junctions the entrance design is a separate matter for the relevant authority, which is why we ask about the site's status on our first call.

On-site installation

  1. Set out the barrier on a plinth beside the lane, leaving room for the arm to swing and for vehicles to turn in.
  2. Cast or fix the foundation, then run conduits to the cabinet, loop detector and readers.
  3. Saw-cut the loops into the road surface and seal them.
  4. Mount the cabinet, fit the arm and balance spring, and set the limits.
  5. Wire photocells, lights and the access system.
  6. Test arm behaviour: stop and reverse on obstacles, behaviour on power loss, and the manual release.

Dubai wear points

Heat and dust affect barriers in particular ways. The cabinet can become an oven in direct afternoon sun, and drive electronics derate or trip when it overheats, so shading and ventilation are part of the design. Sand gets into the balance spring and arm pivot and wears them. Loop detector cables suffer when the road surface cracks in heat, and a sealed loop that cracks stops detecting. At coastal sites humidity corrodes cabinet hardware and terminals. Regular servicing checks the spring balance, the arm bearings, the loops and the cabinet seals.

Signs a barrier needs repair

  • The arm bounces on opening or does not reach the horizontal.
  • It comes down on vehicles because the loop has failed.
  • It closes slowly or opens inconsistently in hot weather.
  • Motor noise, burning smells or cabinet heat.
  • Readers that work only at some distances or times.

Our boom barrier not closing guide lists the checks you can do safely before calling.

What makes a quote bigger or smaller

Lane width and arm type, duty cycle and drive, number of lanes, loop cutting and groundwork, the access method and any integration with parking management or ANPR, plus cabinet protection and maintenance cover. A photograph of the entrance sent through the photo page lets us see headroom and layout before the visit. Companies near Jebel Ali and yards in Al Quoz Industrial Area are typical examples.

Supply in Dubai

Mount Everest Automatic Doors supplies Boom Barriers in Dubai, with a free site visit, installation and servicing by our own technicians. We also supply to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.

Safety firstDo not force a moving gate or a door held by a spring, and switch off the power before you look at an opener. Springs and motors can injure.

01Dubai conditions

What the climate does to doors and gates

  • Heat

Motors, boards and batteries in direct sun run hotter than their data sheets assume. Shade, ventilation and a suitable duty rating matter.

  • Sand and dust

Dust collects in tracks, rack and bottom rails. Cleaning and lubrication on a schedule keep travel smooth and the motor load low.

  • Coastal humidity

Near the shore, salt and humidity attack bare steel and exposed contacts. Finish, fixings and sealed enclosures are worth specifying.

  • Wind

Large solid leaves act as sails. Gates and shutters in exposed spots need the right locks, guides and limit settings.

04Questions

Questions about this service

All questions and answers

My boom barrier arm was knocked by a car. Should it be repaired or replaced?
Light bending in a boom made of aluminium or fibreglass may be straightened by a technician. A sharp kink, a split, or harm close to the mounting calls for a new boom, because a weakened one can snap unexpectedly. After a knock we also examine the balance spring and mechanism, as the impact can upset them. Car parks in Business Bay and DIC see this often.
