Vehicle Loop Detectors for Gates and Barriers

A loop detector uses a buried wire coil to sense cars and control barriers and gates. We fit, tune and repair loops across Dubai. We test the loop and the detector together at a free site visit, and the written quote says whether to repair or relay.

The part of the system nobody sees

Drivers notice the arm and the gate. They never see the coil of insulated wire sitting in a slot under their tyres, yet it decides whether the barrier lifts for a car, whether it stays up while the car passes, and whether it comes down on a bonnet. When a barrier lane starts to behave oddly, the loop is often the cause, and because it is buried, it is the part people postpone investigating.

How an induction loop works

A detector module sends a small alternating current through the loop and watches the frequency of the resulting field. Metal above the loop, such as a car, changes that frequency. The module notices, and switches a relay. That relay is wired to the control board of a barrier, gate or ticket machine. The same idea is used in three jobs:

  • Presence loop: says a car is waiting at the stop line, so the controller can read a ticket, tag or plate.
  • Safety loop: sits under the arm or gate path and prevents closing while a car is there.
  • Exit or free-exit loop: opens the barrier for a car leaving without any button.

You will find them in the parking management systems we install, on boom barriers, and on sliding gates at compound exits.

Fitting a loop, step by step

  1. Mark the loop shape and size on the surface, keeping clear of steel reinforcement, manholes and joints where practical.
  2. Check for services below: power, water, data and drainage.
  3. Saw-cut the slot with rounded corners so wire does not nick.
  4. Clean the slot of dust and water; a wet slot weakens the finish.
  5. Lay the wire in the slot, twist the tail to the pillar, and test insulation resistance before sealing.
  6. Fill with loop sealant that tolerates heat and movement.
  7. Connect to the detector, set frequency and sensitivity, and test with a motorbike, a small car and a high van.

Shape matters. A small car passing at the edge of a wide lane may never register; a tall truck may trigger a neighbouring loop. A detector with several channels and adjustable frequency helps when two loops sit close together and interfere.

Approvals and safety context

Loops are part of the safety system on barriers and gates, so they should follow the safety requirements for power-operated doors and gates. EN 12453 is the reference standard for safety in use of such equipment, and UAE rules on power door safety refer to it. Cutting a slot in a road or car park floor is also structural and underground-service work: in a tower, building management or the owners' body should agree in writing, and in a master community the developer's rules may apply to any work on shared roads. Before cutting, we ask for the plans of buried services and mark the cable routes together with the client. We will not cut near post-tensioned slabs without confirmation from the building consultant.

Dubai conditions that shorten loop life

Heat expands asphalt and concrete, and a sealant that is too stiff splits. Heavy trucks over a thin slab flex the surface and fatigue the wire. Water entering through cracks causes drifting readings, and sandy dust in joints lifts the sealant. Irrigation near a gate can leave the loop permanently damp. Salt air near the coast corrodes terminal connections at the pillar. When road works or repaving occur, loops are often the first casualty. A planned check after any resurfacing and a seasonal test of insulation resistance saves emergency calls.

Signs that a loop needs service

  • Detector light stays on or off regardless of vehicles.
  • Readings drift with weather or irrigation.
  • The barrier misses small vehicles.
  • Another lane's loop triggers yours.
  • A crack or patch has appeared over the slot.

Repair or replace

If a loop reads open circuit, the wire is broken somewhere in the slot. Sometimes the break can be found at an obvious crack and patched, but a joint buried in a loop is a weak point, so we usually recommend relaying the loop in a fresh cut. If the loop is healthy and the detector module is old or confused by interference, replacing the module is cheaper. Detector modules differ in channels, relay outputs and settings, so we match the replacement to the control board.

Choosing loop size and placement

Loop size is a compromise. Wide loops cover the lane but may miss a motorbike; narrow ones catch small vehicles but can lose a trailer. Placement matters too: a safety loop must sit exactly where the arm or gate will come down, and a presence loop must sit at the point where the car stops. Keep loops apart from each other and from large metal objects, and tell us if a gate rail, steel plate or reinforcement sits close by. Where road space is tight, a detector with several channels and adjustable frequency avoids interference.

What the site visit covers and what affects the quote

We trace the lane, test the existing loop and detector, check how the board uses the signals and look at the surface condition. We also ask about vehicle types, because loop size depends on what must be detected. The quote reflects the number of loops, size, cutting depth and surface type, removal of old sealant, the detector modules and whether the board needs updating. Related accessories are on the automation accessories page and photocell protection is covered under photocell safety sensors. Send a photo of the lane through send a photo or use the quote form.

Supply in Dubai

Mount Everest Automatic Doors supplies Loop Detectors in Dubai, with a free site visit, installation and servicing by our own technicians. We also supply to Sharjah, Ajman and Abu Dhabi. We are also supplying across the UAE.

Safety firstDo not force a moving gate or a door held by a spring, and switch off the power before you look at an opener. Springs and motors can injure.

01Dubai conditions

What the climate does to doors and gates

  • Heat

Motors, boards and batteries in direct sun run hotter than their data sheets assume. Shade, ventilation and a suitable duty rating matter.

  • Sand and dust

Dust collects in tracks, rack and bottom rails. Cleaning and lubrication on a schedule keep travel smooth and the motor load low.

  • Coastal humidity

Near the shore, salt and humidity attack bare steel and exposed contacts. Finish, fixings and sealed enclosures are worth specifying.

  • Wind

Large solid leaves act as sails. Gates and shutters in exposed spots need the right locks, guides and limit settings.
