Gates
Turnstile gate product guide for Dubai: components, comparison checks, outdoor build, emergency release, records and servicing, with a free site visit before the written quote.
No fixed price is shown because the quote depends on the opening and the site. We quote in writing after a visit or a photo review.
This page looks at the turnstile gate as a product you will own for years: what is in it, how to judge a unit when it is offered to you and what you will need to look after. It complements our overview of the turnstile service, which covers choosing a type for your building.
Turnstile gates are used in metro and station entrances, stadiums, secure facilities, factories, schools, labour accommodation and offices. The product page lists tripod, full-height and speed gate types, each offering one person at a time, with card, face and fingerprint integration and an emergency drop or release. The questions below help you compare offers fairly.
| What it does | Common sign of trouble | |
|---|---|---|
| Arm, flap or rotor assembly | Physically or visually blocks the lane | Sticking, wobble, late return |
| Clutch and solenoid | Locks the arm and releases it after a valid read | Arm free-spins or will not unlock |
| Control board | Decides, counts and signals | Random counts, dead lane |
| Infrared anti-tailgate sensors | Detect a second person or a wrong-way pass | False alarms in strong sun, dirt |
| Reader and interface | Passes the credential to the system | Intermittent reads |
| Direction indicator LEDs | Show green for go, red for stop | Indicator and behaviour disagree |
| Power supply and backup battery | Keeps the unit alive through brief cuts | Lane dead after a power dip |
| Counter and access software | Records passes and attendance | Counts differ from the access log |
Every one of these parts can be sourced, repaired or replaced, but only if the unit is a standard design. Before you sign, ask where spares come from and how long a replacement board or clutch typically takes to obtain. That one question separates a unit you can service in Dubai from one that sits idle waiting for freight.
An indoor lobby turnstile and a gate at a construction site share a name and little else. Indoors, finish and quiet operation count. Outdoors, sun, sand, rain and cleaning water do the damage, so a roof or canopy over the unit is often worth more than a more expensive model. Drainage at the base matters too, since water that pools around a base plate finds its way to the electrics. We look at these at the site visit and suggest a canopy or a raised plinth where they are needed.
The turnstile is only as useful as the list of people allowed through it. Card, face and fingerprint readers each have strengths: cards are cheap to issue, faces are hands-free, and fingerprints are tied to a person but suffer with dusty or dry hands. Whichever you use, the access control software holds the list and the log. For help comparing readers see RFID and biometric access control for Dubai buildings.
A turnstile that traps people in an emergency is a liability, so the release arrangement is not a footnote. The fire-alarm input must drop arms or open the rotor, and bypass gates must open too. The building's consultant and Dubai Civil Defence requirements decide the arrangement for that building, and we connect and test what the drawings call for. EN 16005 does not cover turnstiles, so please do not treat a pedestrian door certificate as proof that the escape arrangement is correct. In a managed building you also need the management's written approval before work in the lobby; at a work site the principal contractor approves.
We fix the bases to the slab on templates, run conduits for power and signals, level the units and test movement by hand before power is connected. The reader and controller are connected, directions are set, and the release input is tested. At handover we walk through a wrong-way attempt, a tailgating attempt and a power cut, and leave a short fault list for the guards. A photograph of the finished lane is added to the job record.
Wipe sensor windows and keep floors around the base clean and dry. Report any change in sound, such as a click that was not there before. Book servicing before the hottest months so that clutches, solenoids and cooling are checked while the site is quiet. Keep a spare reader or a spare card encoder on site where downtime would cost more than the part.

02Dubai conditions
Motors, boards and batteries in direct sun run hotter than their data sheets assume. Shade, ventilation and a suitable duty rating matter.
Dust collects in tracks, rack and bottom rails. Cleaning and lubrication on a schedule keep travel smooth and the motor load low.
Near the shore, salt and humidity attack bare steel and exposed contacts. Finish, fixings and sealed enclosures are worth specifying.
Large solid leaves act as sails. Gates and shutters in exposed spots need the right locks, guides and limit settings.
Usually yes, in some form. Villa communities and master developers often set rules on gate size, material, colour and position, and a sliding gate needs space beside the opening to travel. Approvals may be needed; ask your community management or the authority before ordering.
Once you know the rules, we can help with a layout. A free site visit lets the technician measure the width, check the run-back space and the ground, and plan the motor, photocells and power point. Take a look at our automatic sliding gates page, or send a photo of the entrance to speed up the quote.
A sliding gate suits a villa with a narrow driveway or a slope, because it moves along the boundary wall and needs no swing arc. A swing gate suits a villa with a flat, open forecourt and gives a classic look, but needs clear space for the leaves to open.
Think also about the wall beside the gate: a sliding gate needs a clear run, usually about the width of the opening. Wind, security and the style of your community matter too. We install both and can compare them during a free site visit. See automatic swing gates for the swing option.
A motor with a sealed control board, strong ventilation and a suitable duty rating copes best. Heat above 45 C can make cheap motors overheat and stop mid-cycle, especially when a gate is in direct afternoon sun or opens many times a day.
Choose a motor sized for the gate weight and usage, mount the control box in shade where possible, and keep the gate running freely so the motor never strains. Our team installs and services Somfy, Nice, CAME, BFT, FAAC and other motor brands. Browse gate motors or ask for a site visit to match the motor to your gate.
It may be. Many gate motors have thermal protection that stops them when the motor or board gets too hot, which can happen in the afternoon sun in Jebel Ali and other open industrial areas. Once it cools, the gate works again.
Check for causes you can fix: a heavy or dragging gate, dirty rollers, sand in the track or a gate used far more than the motor is rated for. Shade for the motor housing also helps. If it keeps happening, a technician should test the current draw and the board. Book through our Jebel Ali page or send a photo of the motor label.
Yes, many gate and door controllers can be paired with a Wi-Fi or GSM module, so you can open, close or check status from your phone, or give a visitor a temporary code. This works well for villas where residents are often away.
The module connects to the control board, and GSM options use a SIM, so they work even where Wi-Fi is weak. Ask whether your existing motor supports a module before buying one. We can check the board model on a free site visit. See our page on GSM and Wi-Fi gate openers for more detail.
A technician visits your property, looks at the opening or entrance, measures, checks power and access, and asks how the door or gate will be used. They may also photograph the location and note any approvals you will need.
After the visit, we send a written quote that explains the scope. There is no charge for the visit itself. You can book through our site visit page, or send a photo first, which can speed up quoting. Our address is Industrial Third, First Al Khail St., Al Quoz, Dubai, and we visit villas, towers and industrial areas around the city.
Yes. Photos are a fast way to start. Send a few clear pictures of the opening, the surrounding wall or floor, any existing motor, and the label on the control box if there is one. A tape measure in the frame helps show the size.
Use our send a photo page to upload them, along with your location, such as Dubai Hills, JVC or Al Quoz. Photos help us understand the job and prepare questions, but a final written quote follows a proper site visit, because we need to check measurements and power on site. You can also ask for a free site visit straight away.
A good contract lists what is checked and how often. For doors and gates that usually means cleaning tracks and guides, checking motors, belts, sensors, safety edges, limit switches, batteries and remote controls, then recording what was found.
In Dubai, ask that dust cleaning, heat related checks and battery tests are included, and that repairs are explained separately before work starts. Compare contracts on scope and visit frequency, not only on cost. Our maintenance contract page explains the options for villas, buildings and warehouses, and a free site visit lets us see what you have.
