Short answer: After a power cut or storm, keep people and vehicles clear of the gate and do not touch wet electrical parts. Use the manual release if the gate has to move, re-engage it before power returns, and restart once. If the control box is wet, the breaker trips, you smell burning or the gate behaves oddly, leave it switched off and call a technician.

Why storms and power cuts upset a gate

Automatic gates are built for the outdoors, but weather puts stress on them. When the power drops, a motor stops where it is and a control board can reset to a default state. When it returns, there can be a surge. Rain can reach connectors and boards, sand can pack into tracks and hinges, and wind can bend a leaf or move a sensor.

The rain that fell on the UAE in April 2024 was reported as the heaviest since national records began in 1949, with Dubai receiving far more than its usual rainfall in a day. Totals differ between reports and stations, but the lesson holds: heavy rain can happen, and equipment should be checked afterwards.

During the event: stay safe

  • Do not operate the gate in standing water or while rain is falling heavily on exposed controls.
  • Stay away from wet electrical equipment, cables and boxes.
  • Do not stand in the path of the gate, and keep children and pets clear.
  • If water is rising near the control box, do not go into it to switch anything off. Call the emergency number or a qualified electrician.

The Dubai electricity authority has repeatedly urged customers before rainy seasons to seal electrical panels, close openings in conduits, inspect earthing and use qualified technicians. Problems inside a property are for building maintenance or a licensed electrician. This is general advice, so follow your building's rules.

Power cut: how to move the gate

  1. Clear the area. Make sure no car or person is near the gate.
  2. Find the manual release. It may be a key, handle or lever on the motor or arm.
  3. Release it as the manual says, with the power off. A gate on a slope can roll once released, so hold it or block it.
  4. Move the gate by hand to open or closed and secure it.
  5. Do not re-engage the release while the gate is half open, unless the manual says it is safe. Move it to a fully open or closed position first.

If your gate has battery backup, it may keep working for a few cycles. Do not run it until the batteries are flat; the lower the charge, the more likely it is to stop mid travel. Read more in our guide to gate motor power cuts, battery backup and solar.

When power returns: restart in order

StepActionWhy
1Check the gate is clear and the release is re-engagedThe motor must be connected to the gate before it moves
2Look at the motor housing and control box from outsideLook for water marks, cracks, insects or a loose cover. Do not open it
3Check the breaker or switch is on and nothing is trippedA trip may point to water or a fault
4Press the remote or wall button once, from a safe placeWatch the whole movement
5Note anything unusual: noise, jerks, no response, stopping earlyUseful for the technician
6Test the safety sensors by moving a hand or object into the beam while the gate closes, as the manual allowsSafety function must still work

Do not press the button repeatedly if nothing happens. Repeated attempts can trip the supply or hide a fault. If the gate does not respond, switch it off at the breaker and wait.

After rain: what to check

  • Control box and motor housing. Any water inside, condensation on the glass, rust marks or a damp smell means leave the power off.
  • Cable entries. Look for damaged glands or cables pulled by wind or debris.
  • Track and drain. Mud and standing water can block a sliding gate track and corrode wheels.
  • Photocells. Rain and mud on lenses cause false stops. Wipe with a soft cloth.
  • Keypad and intercom. Check for water inside the cover or a cracked screen.
  • Ground and fixings. Look for washed-out soil around posts and rack supports.

After a sand or dust storm

  • Sweep sand from the track and hinge areas. Do not hose it into the motor.
  • Wipe photocell lenses and keypad covers.
  • Check the rack and pinion for grit. Do not oil over sand, because it makes a grinding paste.
  • Listen for new noise on the first few cycles.

Our guide to sand and dust protection for door tracks goes further on prevention.

Signs you should not use the gate

  • A burning or electrical smell, scorch marks or smoke.
  • Water inside the motor or control box.
  • A tripping breaker or sparking.
  • A leaf that is bent, off its hinges or out of its track.
  • A gate that moves differently from normal, or does not stop at its limits.
  • A gate that does not reverse or stop when it touches an obstacle.

In those cases switch the supply off if it is safe and dry to do so, secure the gate by hand if needed and call a technician. A wet control board often needs drying, testing or replacement, and this is not a job for a household hairdryer.

Reduce the risk before the next event

  • Know where the manual release and its key are, and test them.
  • Have a technician check that cable entries and covers are sealed and the control box is mounted above splash level.
  • Keep drains and tracks clear.
  • Consider surge protection and battery backup, and ask a qualified electrician about the installation.
  • Book a service before the seasons when you expect heavy weather.

Frequently asked questions

Why will my gate not work after a power cut?

The control board may have reset, the manual release may still be disengaged, a breaker may have tripped or a fault may have appeared. Check the release and breaker, restart once, and call a technician if it does not respond.

Can rain damage a gate motor?

Yes, if water reaches the board, connectors or motor. Look for water marks and condensation inside the housing and keep the power off if you see any.

Is it safe to use a gate that got wet?

Only if the control box and motor are dry and nothing smells or looks damaged. If there is any doubt, switch it off and have a technician test it.

Should I switch off the gate at the breaker before a storm?

Some owners do, but only if the breaker is dry and safe to reach. Make sure you can still move the gate by hand, and ask a technician for advice for your set-up.

What do I do if the gate is stuck open at night?

Use the manual release to move it closed if it is safe, or secure the area and call a technician. Do not force a gate with a damaged motor.

How can I protect my gate from power surges?

Ask a qualified electrician about surge protection on the supply to the gate. A technician can also tell you whether your control board has any built-in protection.

Will battery backup work in a storm?

It can keep the gate working through a short outage, for a limited number of cycles. It does not protect against water damage, so seals and housings still matter.
