Deira is the older commercial half of Dubai, at the northern end of Dubai Creek, where dhows still load and unload goods at the creek docks. The gold, spice and fish souqs, the Deira Clocktower and Deira City Centre (with its own metro station at the entrance) are the references most people use. Under that sit dozens of named neighbourhoods, from Al Ras and Naif near the creek to Abu Hail and Al Qusais further out. Most buildings are dense low and mid-rise blocks with shops at street level, so the typical door is a rolling shutter, a trading-store gate or a small warehouse door.
