What we did

Mount Everest Automatic Doors carried out an ASSA ABLOY dock leveler controller replacement in Al Quoz, Dubai. The controller is the part that drives the leveler, and replacing it can bring a stopped bay back into use without having to replace the whole leveler. The photo shows the new ASSA ABLOY controller, still wrapped in clear protective film, held up by hand. It has a display, a red and yellow isolator switch and function symbols on the front. Beside it, on a steel upright, is an existing grey control box with a three-position selector, green, red and green push buttons and an illuminated red and yellow lamp. The two units are shown side by side for comparison before the swap. The controller is the brain of a dock leveler. It takes the operator's button presses and runs the pump or drive that raises the deck, extends the lip and lowers the leveler onto the trailer. When a controller fails, the leveler may stop responding, move only part of its travel or show a fault, and loading at that bay can stop. A controller replacement typically involves isolating the power, labelling and disconnecting the wiring, mounting the new unit, reconnecting the cables to the right terminals, and then testing each function in turn. The raise, lip, lower and stop functions, as well as any selector switch and indicator lamp, are checked before the bay returns to use. Owners should keep a note of the controller model and the bay it serves, because matching the right unit and wiring makes a replacement faster. Warning signs include a lamp that stays on, buttons that respond slowly, tripped protection, or a deck that creeps down while loading. These deserve prompt attention. Electrical work on loading equipment has to be done carefully and in a logical order. Cable colours and terminal positions are recorded before anything is removed, the old and new units are compared, and the bay is tested with no load before forklifts are allowed back on the leveler.
