Why does my garage door open or close on its own?

A garage door that moves on its own is usually reacting to a stuck wall button, a remote pressed inside a bag or car, a damaged wire in the button circuit or interference at the receiver. A worn control board can also send false signals, so it helps to check the simple causes first.

Start by unplugging the opener for a moment and testing each remote one at a time. If the door only moves when one handset is present, replace that handset. If it still moves with no remote, the wall button wiring or the control board is the likely cause and the opener should be inspected rather than left running.
