Short answer: A garage door that opens by itself is usually receiving a signal from a stuck remote or wall button, a keypad, an app, a stray remote or a faulty receiver. A door that stops halfway usually has an obstruction, a dirty or misaligned sensor, a limit or force setting issue, or a track or spring fault. Check what is safe from the floor, then call a technician.
Stay safe first
Garage doors are heavy. The springs and cables that balance the door carry very high tension, and they can injure badly if released or touched. Before any check, make sure of three things.
- Nobody, including pets, is under or near the door.
- You work only from the floor. Do not climb, and do not reach into the tracks or springs.
- If the door is stuck half open or unbalanced, treat it as unsafe and do not walk under it.
Published safety guidance recommends testing the reversing function of an opener every month, and says an opener whose reversing mechanism fails should be disconnected until it is repaired. If you suspect yours does not reverse, stop using the door.
Part 1: the door opens or closes by itself
A garage door does not decide to move. Something tells it to. Work through the sources of a signal from the simplest to the most technical.
| Possible cause | How to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stuck remote button | Look at remotes in cars, pockets and drawers; a pressed button repeats the signal | Take out the battery from each remote, then watch the door |
| Wall button or wiring fault | Press and listen for sticking; look for damp or damage on the button and cable | Disconnect the wall button if you can safely; book a technician |
| Keypad | Check for water, sand in the buttons or a stuck key | Wipe it; a technician replaces a damaged keypad |
| App or smart module | Check recent app activity, schedules and who has access | Remove unknown users; change the password |
| Car button or someone else's remote | Does it happen when a car passes, or when a family member arrives? | Erase the opener memory and re-pair only the remotes you want |
| Receiver or board fault | If everything above is ruled out and it happens at random | Book a technician to test the receiver and board |
Moving into a new home is a common time for this. A previous owner's remotes may still be paired. Our guide to pairing, erasing and replacing garage door remotes explains how the opener memory works in general terms.
If a door closes by itself while you are using the garage, stop using it and call. That can point to a sensor or timer issue, and a closing door should always stop or reverse when it meets something.
Part 2: the door stops halfway
If the door travels part of the way and stops or reverses, the opener is protecting something. It may be reacting to a real obstruction, or to a false one. Check in this order.
- Is anything in the way? Look for items in the door's path, a bicycle, a car bumper, a rubber seal caught in the track, or a stuck sign. Remove the obstruction and try again.
- Look at the safety sensors. On a closing door, these beams sit near the floor on each side. Check that both lenses are clean and that the lights on them are steady. A blinking light often means the beam is blocked or misaligned.
- Wipe the lenses. Use a soft dry cloth. Sun glare, dust and cobwebs cause false stops. Do not bend or knock the sensors.
- Check if it stops on opening or closing. A closing stop with a reverse is often a sensor or force issue. An opening stop can be a limit, a binding track or a power problem.
- Try the wall button. If the remote works and the button does not, or the other way around, note it for the technician.
- Look at the door from inside, from a distance. A crooked door, a gap at one corner, a frayed cable or a loose panel is a mechanical fault. Stop here and do not operate the door.
What the pattern tells a technician
| Pattern | Likely area |
|---|---|
| Stops and reverses in the same place every time | Obstruction, track bind, limit setting or sensor |
| Stops at random heights | Sensor glitch, board or power issue |
| Opener hums but door barely moves | Spring or balance problem, or a seized part |
| Door slams down or feels very heavy by hand | Broken spring or cable; stop immediately |
| Works in the morning, fails in the afternoon | Sun on a sensor lens, or heat on a board |
| Stops when a car passes | Interference with the receiver, or a vibrating mount |
Write down what you saw, when, and what the lights did. Photos of the sensor lights and the opener display help.
Settings you should not change on your own
Openers have limit and force settings that tell them where to stop and how hard to push. Wrong settings can leave a door closing with too much force, or not closing at all. These settings belong to a technician who can test the safety reversal afterward. Do not turn adjustment screws on the opener unless the manual tells you to and you know how to test the result safely.
Dubai conditions that cause these faults
- Sun on sensor lenses in the late afternoon can cause false stops.
- Sand and dust in the tracks and on the sensor lenses make doors drag and trigger sensors.
- Heat affects remote batteries and boards.
- Humidity and sprinkler spray reach keypads and wall buttons.
Call a technician if
- The door is crooked, hangs open, or you can see a broken spring or cable.
- The door does not reverse on an obstruction.
- The fault repeats after the safe checks.
- You smell burning or see damage on the opener.
- The door has been forced or the opener has been changed by someone else.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my garage door open by itself at night?
Something is sending a signal. Check for a remote with a pressed button, a keypad with water in it, an app schedule or a previous owner's remote. If none applies, the receiver may be at fault.
Can a neighbour's remote open my garage door?
With modern rolling code openers it is unlikely. Older fixed-code systems are easier to trigger by mistake. A technician can tell you which type you have.
Why does my garage door stop halfway and go back up?
On a closing door this is usually the safety system reacting to a real or false obstruction. Check the sensors and the floor, then book a visit if it repeats.
Is it safe to keep using a door that stops halfway?
Not if you are not sure why. A door that stops without cause may also fail to reverse safely. Use it only after the cause is known.
Can I adjust the limits myself?
The manual may allow it, but the door must then be tested for safe reversal. Most owners should leave limit settings to a technician who can test it properly.
Why is my garage door heavy to lift by hand?
A door that feels very heavy can mean a broken spring or cable. Do not try to lift it or stand under it. Leave it where it is and call a technician.
