How high should gate safety sensors be fitted for pets and bicycles?

Gate safety sensors are normally fitted low, around knee height or lower, so they detect a child, a pet or a bicycle wheel as well as a car. A second pair higher up can cover taller objects. A single sensor at bumper height can miss small things near the ground.

The right height depends on the gate type and what passes through. Sensors must be aligned, clean and pointed away from direct sun, which can confuse them. Test them often by placing an object in the beam while the gate closes. The gate should stop and reverse.
