Short answer: When a gate motor is old or its model is no longer sold, spare parts are still often available as boards, capacitors, limit parts, remotes or compatible kits. Photograph the label, the board, the receiver and the gate itself, and we can tell you whether a repair, a compatible swap or a new operator makes sense.
The problem: the motor still moves, but nobody sells the part
Every year we meet owners in Ajman and Sharjah whose gate has worked for ten years or more, and now a control board has failed. A search for "spare parts for gate motor Ajman", "control board for old gate motor" or "gate motor supplier near me" gives a list of shops with the latest models but not the board you need. It feels as if the whole gate is finished. Often it is not. The motor, arm, pinion and leaf may be fine, and it is the electronics that are tired.
This guide explains what can be kept, what usually needs replacing and how to describe the situation so a supplier can help. For brand specific label reading see gate motor brands compared. We mention brand names only as general trade knowledge, and we are not an authorised dealer of any of them.
What fails first on an older gate motor
| Part | Typical sign of failure | Is a compatible replacement common |
|---|---|---|
| Run capacitor | Motor hums, starts slowly or not at all | Yes, easy to match by value |
| Control board | No lights, random behaviour, burnt smell | Sometimes. Universal and direct replacement boards exist |
| Radio receiver | Remote range drops, codes lost | Yes, plug in or external receivers |
| Remote handset | Dead or intermittent | Often, if codes can be copied or a new receiver is fitted |
| Limit magnets, switches | Gate overshoots or stops early | Yes |
| Pinion, rack, arm | Grinding, backlash, slipping | Often, mechanical parts are widely made |
| Motor winding | Overheats, trips, smell of varnish | Depends on model. Sometimes a replacement motor, sometimes a new operator |
| Photocells | Nuisance stops, no beam | Yes, most modern cells fit older boards |
Our guide to repair vs replace a gate motor sets out how to weigh these.
What to photograph and note
- The motor label: model, voltage, power, serial number. If it is faded, try angled light.
- The board: whole board, then close ups of any printed model or version near the terminal block.
- The wiring: terminals with wires in place, before anything is moved.
- The receiver: plug-in card or external box, with its label.
- The remote: front and back, and its battery type.
- The gate: a wide shot, plus a video of it moving by hand with the motor released.
Send them using the photo page. A photo of the whole assembly lets us judge if mechanical wear is serious, which affects whether new electronics are worth fitting.
Four routes, from smallest to biggest
Route 1: repair a single part
If one component is faulty and the rest is sound, a repair is the least disruptive. Capacitors, fuses, relays and some switches fall in this class.
Route 2: direct replacement board
Some boards have a matching successor that fits the same motor with minor changes. We confirm the part against your photos and tell you what changes in wiring, settings or remotes.
Route 3: universal control kit
When the original board is no longer available, a universal controller can drive the existing motor. It has its own settings and safety inputs, and often a new receiver and handsets. This is a good fit for older villa gates with healthy mechanics.
Route 4: replace the operator
If the gearbox, housing or motor is worn out, or the gate has changed since the operator was fitted, a new operator is the honest answer. We would size it for the actual leaf, not the old label. See gate motors for the families we supply.
How a technician decides: a worked example in words
Take a typical case. A villa owner sends photos of a sliding gate that stopped overnight. The label shows a mid-range operator that is no longer on sale, the board has a brown mark near the power input, and the video shows the gate moving freely by hand. That combination points to an electrical failure on healthy mechanics, so a board level solution makes sense. We would confirm the motor type, check whether the limit parts use magnets or switches, and offer either a direct replacement or a universal controller with a new receiver.
Now take a different case. The label is unreadable, the pinion teeth are sharp and polished, the gate drags by hand, and the housing has rust holes at the base. Here the electronics are not the main issue. A new board would sit on a worn machine, so replacement of the operator, with a check of the rack and track, is the honest advice. Both owners started with the same sentence: "my gate motor stopped". The photos told two different stories, and that is why we ask for them before a visit.
Remotes and receivers: the part everyone loses
A lost or broken remote is the single most common spare part request. Handsets use different coding systems, and some older ones cannot be copied. In those cases the sensible route is a new receiver and new handsets that work together. If you need extra remotes for family members or tenants, tell us how many and whether you want to remove old codes. Our guide to garage door openers, remotes, sensors and springs covers the same questions for garage doors, and the page on remote controls and receivers shows what is available.
Safety when you upgrade an old gate
Older gates often have no photocells, no safety edge and a harsh start. When we replace electronics, we suggest bringing the safety up to current practice, which usually means photocells at least, a flashing lamp and sensible force limits. Relevant safety standards such as EN 12453 exist for this reason. It is a small addition that makes a gate safer for children and pets. Read gate safety for villas and compounds to see what that means.
Where spare parts requests come up
| Area | Typical situation |
|---|---|
| Al Nuaimiya | Older building gates with discontinued boards |
| Al Rashidiya | Villa gates fitted a decade ago |
| Al Rawda | Swing gate arms and receivers |
| Al Hamidiya | Lost remotes and tired capacitors |
| Al Jurf | Industrial gates with worn pinions |
| Emirates City | Barrier and gate boards |
| Muwaileh | Older compound gates, remote replacement |
| Al Qasimia | Mixed use buildings, limit parts |
| Al Nahda | Compound gates, water damaged boards |
| Sharjah Industrial Areas | Yard gates, heavy use parts |
| Hamriyah | Salt affected terminals and boards |
Questions to ask a spare parts supplier
- Can you identify my model from the photos, and what do you need beyond that?
- Is the replacement part original, compatible or universal, and what does that change?
- Will my existing remotes work, or do I need new ones?
- How will you test the safety devices afterwards?
- If the part fails, what is the next step and who handles it?
What affects the cost of spare parts and conversions
We do not post figures. The main factors are which part is needed, how common the model is, whether the part is original, compatible or universal, the labour to fit and set it, how many remotes you need and whether safety devices are added. A small capacitor swap and a full control upgrade are very different jobs, and the quote follows. Ask for the parts and labour listed so you can compare. See maintenance plans if you want an ongoing arrangement.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy spare parts for a gate motor in Ajman?
From a company that identifies the model first. We supply and fit boards, capacitors, remotes, limit parts and mechanical parts. Send photos of the label and board and we say what is practical.
My gate motor model is discontinued. What can I do?
Options include a compatible board, a universal controller or a new operator. The choice depends on the condition of the motor and the leaf. A photo set lets us suggest the lowest disruption route.
Can you replace a control board without changing the motor?
Often yes. A compatible or universal board can drive an existing motor. We check the voltage, motor type and limit system before fitting.
Do old remote controls work with a new board?
Sometimes. If the board uses the same radio coding, existing handsets may work. If not, a new receiver and handsets solve it. We test before we promise.
How do I find the model of my gate motor?
Look for a label on the housing, often silver or white, with a code and serial number. If it is faded, photograph it at an angle with a torch. The board also carries a name.
Is it worth repairing a gate motor over ten years old?
If the mechanics are sound and the fault is electrical, repair or a board swap is often worth it. If the gearbox or housing is worn, replacement may be better. We advise after seeing it.
Can you source a gear or pinion for my sliding gate?
Often yes, since pinions and racks are widely made. We need the module, tooth count and bore, or a sample or clear photo of the old part.
Do you copy remote controls?
Some can be copied, others cannot. It depends on the coding system. We check the handset and the receiver and tell you if a new set is a better choice.
What happens to the safety devices when I replace the board?
We reconnect and test photocells, safety edges and stops, and suggest additions if the old setup had none. The gate is tested before we leave.
