How do I open my garage door by hand when the opener fails?

Most openers have a red release cord or handle that hangs from the trolley on the rail. Pull it down while the door is fully closed, and the door disconnects from the motor so you can lift it by hand. Lift slowly and keep your fingers clear of the panel joints.

If the door feels very heavy or drops when you let go, stop. That usually points to a broken spring or cable, and lifting it can cause injury. Do not force it, and do not use the release when the door is partly open, because it may fall.
