Short answer: Wood look garage doors in Dubai are either real timber or a wood-effect finish on steel or aluminium. Real timber looks warm but needs regular refinishing because of sun, humidity and dust. A wood-effect finish gives the same look with much less upkeep. Neither is maintenance free, and colour slowly ages in strong light.

Two different things sold as "wood"

Owners ask for a wood door and mean one of two products. The first is solid or veneered timber. The second is a steel or aluminium door with a printed, foiled or powder-coated wood-effect surface. They look close from the street. Up close and after a few summers, they behave very differently.

  • Real timber: natural grain, can be sanded and refinished, but it moves with heat and moisture.
  • Wood effect on steel or aluminium: stable shape, light to handle, finish is a coating that cannot be sanded back like timber.

What Dubai weather does to each

Strong sun is the main enemy. Ultraviolet light breaks down varnish and oil on timber, and the surface goes grey and dry if it is left alone. Humidity near the coast makes timber swell, and dry months make it shrink. That movement can open joints and twist a large panel.

Wood-effect finishes do not swell. Their weak point is colour. Dark tones fade faster in direct light, and a wall that gets afternoon sun will age a door faster than a shaded one. Ask the supplier for the finish data sheet and what it says about outdoor use. Where we are unsure of a figure, we say so and point you to the manufacturer's paper.

Never wipe sand off dry. Rinse it with water first, or the grit works like sandpaper on any finish.

Weight, balance and the opener

Timber is heavier than most steel or aluminium panels of the same size. A heavier leaf changes the spring balance and the opener you need. A door that is not balanced puts strain on the motor and wears the gear early. The opener must be chosen for the real weight of the finished door, not the catalogue size. Our guide on how to choose a garage door opener explains the sizing in principle, and the garage door openers page shows what we handle.

Matching the gate, fence and wall

A garage door rarely stands alone. It sits next to a gate, a fence, a pergola or a stone wall. Wood-effect finishes are easier to match across steel gates and aluminium fences because the same coating family can be used. Real timber next to painted metal can look mismatched after a year, as the timber weathers and the metal does not.

Take photos of the whole frontage in daylight and send them to us. We can compare finishes against your wall and gate before you order. See our residential garage doors in Dubai and standard garage doors pages for the range, and the villa garage door guide for sizing and layout.

Community rules and insulation

Many villa communities set colour and material rules for external doors. Read our answer on community approval before you commit to a finish. If the garage faces the sun, think about an insulated panel as well. Our page on insulated sectional doors covers heat and noise.

Frequently asked questions

Is a real wood garage door a good idea in Dubai?

It can work, but go in with open eyes. Real timber gives a look that coatings imitate but do not fully match. The price you pay is upkeep: regular cleaning and recoating, and attention to swelling in humid weeks. A covered, shaded garage face is kinder to timber than a west wall in full afternoon sun. If you do not want a maintenance routine, choose a wood-effect finish instead.

Will a wood-effect door fade in the sun?

Most coatings soften in colour over time, and dark tones show it first, especially on walls that take direct afternoon light. Fade is slow rather than sudden. Ask the supplier for the data sheet for the exact finish and what it says about outdoor exposure. Choosing a mid tone instead of a very dark one usually hides ageing better. Washing the surface regularly also helps the finish last.

Can a wood look door be made to match my gate?

Often yes, especially when both use a wood-effect coating on metal. Exact matches between different materials are harder, because light changes how each surface looks. Send us daylight photos of the garage, gate and fence together, and ask for a physical sample. Hold the sample against the real wall at different times of day before you approve the order. Colour looks different on a vertical door panel than on a flat sample, so judge it in place. If the gate is already weathered, remember that the new door will look brighter at first and settle over the months.

Does a wood look door need a stronger opener?

It can, if the door is real timber or a thick insulated build, because weight rises. The opener should be sized for the finished door, and the springs balanced so the door stays still when stopped halfway. A well balanced door is easy to lift by hand when the opener is released. We check balance and test the full cycle, the safety sensors and the remotes before handover.

How do I clean a wood look garage door?

Rinse dust and sand off with water first, then wash with mild soap and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid harsh solvents, abrasive pads and pressure washers held close, because they can mark the finish and force water into joints. Dry the surface and check the seals at the bottom edge. For timber, follow the finish maker's advice on recoating.
