Short answer: To compare insulated garage doors, read the spec sheet في six things: skin material, core type (foam or hollow), panel thickness, perimeter and panel-joint seals, thermal break, and glazing. Ask for the door's thermal figure as a whole door, not just the foam. Insulation slows heat gain and cuts noise, but it does not make a garage cool by itself.
What does an insulated garage door spec sheet actually tell you?
It tells you what the door is made of and how heat can pass through it. Most sheets are short, and the useful lines are easy to miss. Read them في the order a heat path would take: outer skin، core, inner skin, joints, edges, glass.
We already cover the basics في our insulated garage doors guide for Dubai. This page is the next step: how to read the document a supplier hands you and what to ask them to write down. If you only want the high-level answer on the heat question, our FAQ on how insulated panels help في Dubai heat is shorter.
| Spec line | What it describes | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Skin | The outer and inner sheet of each panel, usually steel or aluminium, with a coating | Which metal, what coating, and is the inner skin the same as the outer? |
| Core | What fills the panel between the skins | Foam or hollow? Which foam type? |
| Panel thickness | Overall thickness of one panel في millimetres | Is this overall thickness or core thickness only? |
| Seals | Bottom, side, top and panel-to-panel gaskets | Are all four edges and the joints sealed? |
| Thermal break | A gap or insulating material that stops metal touching metal from skin to skin | Does any metal run through the panel edge? |
| الزجاج | Any window or glass section | Single, double or insulated glass? Is the frame thermally broken? |
| Whole-door thermal value | A figure for the complete assembled door, if the maker publishes one | Is it for the panel centre, or the full door with joints? |
What is the difference between a foam-filled and a hollow panel?
A foam-filled panel has an insulating foam bonded between two skins. A hollow panel is a single sheet, or a double sheet with air or nothing between. The foam resists heat flow, and bonded foam also stiffens the panel. A void on its own does neither job well.
Look at the spec في the word "sandwich" or "foam", and ask the type. Polyurethane and polystyrene are the two you will see named. They differ في how well they resist heat for a given thickness and how they are made، and you should ask the supplier for the figure on the actual product, not a general claim. Foam that is injected and bonded to both skins behaves as one stiff panel. Foam that is loose or glued only to one side can rattle or let the skin flex.
- Single skin. One sheet of metal. Cheap and light. It passes heat and noise readily.
- Double skin, hollow. Two sheets with a void. Stiffer, but the void is not insulation.
- Double skin, foam-filled. The usual insulated panel. Ask what the foam is and how it is bonded.
A hollow panel sold as "double skin" is not the same as an insulated one. This is the most common point of confusion on quotes, so ask that the core be named في writing.
Does panel thickness matter, and what should I ask?
Thickness matters because more foam between the skins means more resistance to heat flow, all else equal. But a thicker panel from a poor maker can still lose to a thinner one with better sealing, so thickness is one line, not the whole answer.
Ask three things:
- Is the stated thickness the overall panel or only the foam core?
- Is the thickness the same across the whole panel, including the edges and the joint profile?
- Does the thickness change with colour, finish or window option?
Thickness also affects the track and hardware. A thicker panel is heavier, which changes spring selection and the opener's duty. Your أبواب كراج قطاعية أوتوماتيكية need to be sized to the real weight, so give the supplier the panel spec before the springs are chosen.
We do not publish a recommended thickness here because the right figure depends on the door width, the panel profile and the manufacturer. Ask في the datasheet.
Why do seals and joints decide how well the door performs?
Because heat, dust and noise go through gaps faster than through foam. A well-filled panel with a bad bottom seal leaks around the whole width of the door, and a panel joint without a gasket leaks along its full length.
Check these on the spec and then on the installed door:
- Bottom seal. A flexible rubber or PVC strip that follows the floor. In Dubai, sand wears it, and sun can harden it. Our FAQ on the cracked rubber strip on a garage door explains why it fails.
- Side seals. Strips along the jamb that press against the panel edge.
- Top seal. Along the lintel, where the door closes against the wall.
- Panel-to-panel joints. A tongue-and-groove or gasketed profile so one panel meets the next without a gap.
If the floor is uneven, a standard bottom seal cannot close the gap. Tell the surveyor, so they can allow for it. A seal also needs the door to be square في its tracks، because a twisted door leaves a gap on one side.
What are a thermal break and glazing, and why do they matter?
A thermal break is a break في the metal path from the outer skin to the inner skin، usually a strip of insulating material at the panel edge. Without one, metal at the edge carries heat straight through even if the middle of the panel is well insulated. Glazing matters because glass usually loses or gains heat faster than an insulated panel.
For windows or glass sections, ask:
- Is the glazing single, double or an insulated unit?
- Is the frame metal with a thermal break, or plain metal?
- Is the glass tinted or coated against sun, and is that stated on the sheet?
- Does the glass area count في the whole-door thermal figure?
If you want a lot of glass, you are choosing daylight over insulation, and that is a fair choice, as long as you know it. Our أبواب كراج بانورامية are an example of a design where glass is the point. Our FAQ on whether a glass garage door makes the garage hot covers that trade-off.
What does insulation do في Dubai heat، and what does it not do?
Insulation slows the rate at which heat moves through the door. It does not cool the garage, and it does not stop the garage warming up if the walls, roof and slab are also hot. It helps most when the garage is attached to the house or air-conditioned, and least when it is an open, ventilated store.
The thermal value people see on datasheets is usually a U-value: how much heat passes through one square metre of a construction في each degree of difference between inside and outside. A lower U-value means less heat passes. It is a property of the whole assembled door, which includes the joints, edges and any glass, not only the foam. A panel-centre figure is flattering because it leaves out the weak spots. Ask which one you are being shown.
| Insulation helps with | Insulation does not do |
|---|---|
| Slowing heat gain through the door leaf | Cool the garage on its own |
| Reducing radiant heat from the inner face of a sun-hit door | Fix heat coming through the roof, walls or slab |
| Cutting some traffic and street noise | Block noise through gaps or an unsealed edge |
| Stiffening the panel against dents | Make a badly fitted door seal |
We will not promise a temperature drop. It depends on the orientation, the garage, how often the door opens and whether the space is cooled. Anyone who quotes a number without knowing those is guessing. For a shop-floor or warehouse view, see insulated commercial garage doors for Dubai warehouses.
Does an insulated door make the garage quieter?
Somewhat. Foam damps the panel, so it rings less, and a sealed door lets less street noise in. But most opening noise comes from rollers, hinges, the drive and the rail, not the panel. A heavier insulated door can make a weak opener work harder, which adds noise.
If noise is the real problem, read our FAQ on why a garage door is so loud when it opens. For a garage below a bedroom, ask about nylon rollers and a belt-drive opener as well as the panel.
What should I ask a supplier to put في writing?
Ask في the panel construction, the core type, the thickness, the seals, the glazing, the thermal figure with its scope, the opener model and the panel weight. A written quote for an insulated door that does not state these is not a comparison tool.
- Skin material and coating, inside and outside.
- Core type and how it is bonded.
- Overall panel thickness and core thickness.
- Seal types on all four edges and between panels.
- Thermal break, yes or no, and where.
- Glazing type, if any, and its frame.
- Thermal value, and whether it is في the whole door.
- Panel weight, spring set and opener model.
- Maker's name في panels and the opener, so parts can be traced.
We can supply and service panels and openers across several makes, including Italpannelli panels, and this is a neutral note, not a ranking. For a rolling option with a foam-filled slat, see ستائر رولر معزولة مزدوجة الجدار, which suit units where a sectional door does not fit.
When you are ready, send the opening size and photos with the sectional doors service request, and we will compare the spec lines with you at the survey. Villas في areas such as دبي هيلز إستيت و البرشاء are booked by appointment as part of our Dubai work.
What should I send before a visit?
Send the opening width and height, a photo of the garage from inside and out, the door and opener labels, and a note on which wall faces the sun. Mention if the garage is attached to a room, air-conditioned, or used as a workshop, because that changes how much insulation matters.
- Photos of the full opening, inside and outside.
- Width, height, headroom, side room and backroom.
- The current door's label or any datasheet you still have.
- The opener make, and a photo of the remote.
- Whether you want glass or a solid panel.
Our FAQ on what to send for a garage door quote covers the rest.
الأسئلة الشائعة
What is the best insulated garage door?
There is no single best. The best door is the one whose foam core, thickness, seals and glazing fit your garage and which you can have serviced. Compare spec sheets line by line, not brand names, and get the claims في writing.
Are insulated sectional garage doors worth it في Dubai?
They usually are في an attached or air-conditioned garage, because the door is a large surface facing the sun. For an open ventilated store, the benefit is smaller. Decide by how the space is used, and let a survey confirm.
What are insulated panel doors made of?
Two skins, usually coated steel or aluminium, with a foam core bonded between them. Some have a thermal break at the edge, a gasketed joint profile and optional glazing. Always ask which materials are used on both faces.
Is a thicker panel always better?
No. Thicker panels resist heat flow better في principle، but poor seals, metal bridges at the edge or large glass areas can cancel the gain. Thickness also adds weight, so springs and the opener must match.
Does the U-value on a datasheet apply to the whole door?
Not always. Some figures are في the panel centre only. Ask whether the value includes joints, edges and glass. The whole-door figure is the honest one for comparing doors.
Will an insulated door stop the garage getting hot?
It slows the heat, it does not stop it. Walls, roof, slab, glass and how often the door opens all add heat. We do not promise a temperature drop, because it depends on your garage.
Can I add insulation to my existing door?
Sometimes a lining kit can be fitted, but it adds weight and can unbalance the springs. A technician must check the balance before and after. Often replacing the panels is cleaner than adding to a worn door.
